Importance of Black History

"My People are destroyed for lack of knowledge"
~Hosea 4:6

"A man without knowledge of himself and his heritage is like a tree without roots"
~Dick Gregory

History is knowledge, identity, and power. History is a foundation upon which personal and group identities are built. It is a living library that produces a script of roles and models to which one can aspire. History is power. It provides an image out of which people act. By telling us where we have been, history tells us where we can go. Black history is a central part of American history. It is a history that all Americans should seek to learn about a people and culture that is still missing from our school history books. More than American history, Black history mirrors the history of the overwhelming majority of the peoples of the earth. In the words of Ralph Ellison, the Black experience “has been one of the great human experiences and one of the great triumphs of the human spirit in modern times, in fact, in the history of the world.”

Black history spans two continents and provides a legacy that includes kings and queens of Africa, mathematicians, abolitionists, writers, educators, scientists, and inventors, athletes, politicians, and entertainers. Black history is a rich one full of achievements and contributions made to world history.
